Before the 2003 season, Major League Soccer held Supplemental Drafts, in which players who had signed with the league after the 2003 MLS SuperDraft were made available for selection.

Chicago Fire Select Karcz in 2005 MLS Supplemental Draft (560 words)
The midfielder was chosen in the third round of the draft with the 27th overall pick.
MLS added the Supplemental Draft this year to help teams fill out their rosters to a record-high 28 players.
Karcz becomes the fourth Rutgers player in as many years to be drafted by the MLS, joining former RU standouts Gros, Guy Abrahamson, who was a fifth-round selection of the Columbus Crew in 2003, and Dennis Ludwig, a fourth-round pick by the DC United in 2002.

From 1996 to 1999, all players playing in the United States currently playing professionally in the United Soccer Leagues were eligible for the MLS Supplemental Draft, where they could be selected by all Major League Soccer teams.
In 2003, MLS held a Supplemental draft to distribute players who were signed by the league after the SuperDraft.
In 2005, with the expansion of developmental rosters and the creation of reserve teams, MLS re-instituted the Supplemental draft, to be held after the SuperDraft.
