The attacker had ramed his truck bomb into the three-story building tearing off the facade. It was the deadliest attack to date on international troops. Insurgents first fired at the police checkpoint on the main road to the building. The police returned fire but were unable to halt the vehicle. When the police scatered the insurgent fighters removed the roadblock and the tanker truck moved toward the building and plowed into it. The huge explosion also hit nearby houses. Up to 26 people were killed including 16 Italian soldiers, mostly military police, and 2 Italian and 8 Iraqi civilians. At least 100 people were injured.
