The 2005 ProTour was the first year of the newly-introduced UCI ProTour system, in which the ProTour teams are guaranteed, and obliged to, participate in the series of ProTour races. As the spring classics campaign continues, Bettini was plagued with injuries, but fellow one-day specialist Danilo di Luca of Liquigas-Bianchi found his best form in years and won the Vuelta al País Vasco race. With his confidence boosted, he topped his form with wins in both La Flèche Wallonne and the Amstel Gold Race, leading many to speculate that he would also win the Liège-Bastogne-Liège. However, Jens Voigt committed himself to long breakaways in both la Flèche and Liège, and in the later race was joined by Kazakh Alexandre Vinokourov. Despite promises of igniting the race with the trio of Jan Ullrich, Andreas Klöden and Vinokourov, the T-Mobile team failed to wrestle the race control from Armstrong's Discovery team, and allegations flew abound of internal dispute within the team. Instead Ivan Basso showed himself as a main contender, though he never seemed to pressure Armstrong. As in the previous editions, Armstrong's team launched a vicious attack on an early mountain stage to discourage other contenders from pursuing the top podium. Spanish racer Alejandro Valverde of Illes Balears showed that he is a serious contender for the future by not only staying with Armstrong, but by sprinting away to win the stage at the finale. UCI ProTour - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (361 words)
This system is new to 2005 and in many ways replaces the UCI World Cup series, which ended at the end of the 2004 season.
The UCI lobbied the organizers of the Grand Tours to participate in the ProTour, and was successful in obtaining their agreement despite prior disagreements and threats to completely pull out of the ProTour.
The ProTour has been criticized for fear of not having a system in place for a timely upgrade and downgrade of teams from/to the lower-tier UCI Continental Circuits.
VeloNews: 2005 Tour de France Special Coverage (405 words)
The ProTour, the brainchild of UCI president Hein Verbruggen, was introduced in the autumn of 2004 to help modernize and better organize the often-hectic professional cycling calendar - and its global image.
The UCI has throughout the reforms met with resistance from the respective organizers of the Tour de France, Giro d' Italia and Vuelta a España, who felt the far-reaching reforms were being rushed in too quickly and without their input.
One of the bases of the UCI ProTour was to encourage the participation of the best teams in the best races - something which certain races, such as the Giro, has suffered from in the past.
