Results

Voter turnout across the Netherlands was around 58%, slightly more than in the 2002 municipal elections. Official results will be announced on March 9, 2006 (official site), but preliminary results show that Labour has obtained the most votes and seats, with the Socialist Party showing the largest increase, partly due to the latter's participation in more municipalities than in 2002. The conservative coalition parties CDA, VVD, D66 all had noticable losses. Dissatisfaction with the current national government is the most cited source for the left win. Media attention before election day was manifested around Rotterdam, where the late Pim Fortuyn's Leefbaar Rotterdam was a surprise winner in 2002. Labour gained more seats than they had before 2002, and became the largest fraction once again.
