Most attention will centre on the presidential race. Competition between the three major parties is expected to be fierce, with the National Action Party (PAN) eager to hold on to the presidency for a second period, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) equally keen to regain the office it lost in the 2000 election for the first time in 71 years, and the Party of the Democratic Revolution believing itself with a good chance to win after disappointments in the two previous elections and suspected massive fraud in 1988. It is not yet known whether the two of the smaller parties (the Labour Party (PT) and Convergencia, which enjoy congressional representation) will ally themselves with the big three or put forward their own candidates.
