Competition Format The twelve teams that qualified were divided into three groups. The top two teams in each group advanced to the knockout stage along with the best two of the third-place teams, filling out the knockout field of eight. If teams were level on points, they were ranked on the following criteria in order: - Head to head matches between the tied teams (if applicable)
- Greatest goal difference in group matches
- Greatest number of goals scored in the three group matches
- If teams are still tied, CONCACAF will hold a drawing of lots
Overview Group A This group saw Canada put on an impressive show, upsetting favored Costa Rica in their first match on their way to a finish as group leaders. However, the real surprise of the group was the performance of underdogs Guadeloupe, who drew Haiti and stunned Canada 2-1 before suffering a narrow defeat in their last match against Costa Rica. That win sent the Ticos through to the next round; however, Guadeloupe also qualified as one of the best two third-place finishers, giving them an opportunity to continue their Cinderella story. Haiti, the defending Caribbean Nations Cup champions, were knocked out early due to a last round defeat against Canada.
Group B The group was dominated by the host and defending Gold Cup champion United States side, who gave the best first-round performance of any team by breezing through group play with three wins. The USA did not even concede a goal in their three group matches, while scoring seven of their own. Second place went to Guatemala, who rebounded from an early loss to the Stars and Stripes by edging fellow Central Americans El Salvador, and then drawing Trinidad and Tobago in a game that led to the Soca Warriors' unexpected elimination. El Salvador, after a fairly impressive performance earlier this year as the hosts for the UNCAF Nations Cup, also failed to advance.
Group C In a group that was closer than expected, the most shocking result saw four-time Gold Cup champion Mexico defeated 2-1 by eventual group winner Honduras on the second day of group play. Other than that result, however, everything went largely to form. El Tri rebounded from their loss by edging Panama to finish second in the group. Los Canaleros, darlings of the 2005 Gold Cup, still made the quarterfinals by finishing as one of the two best third-place teams. Cuba turned in a disappointing last-place effort, finally being dismissed by the blistering right foot of Honduran striker Carlos Pavón, who notched four goals in the first round's best individual performance.
Knockout Round The quarterfinals saw the advancement of all three North American teams, as Canada blanked Guatemala, the United States outlasted Panama, and Mexico needed extra time to send Costa Rica home in a match that saw 3 red cards for the Ticos. The only real surprise came when Guadeloupe rounded out the final four with a 2-1 upset of Honduras. Their fairytale journey finally ended in the semifinals against Mexico, however, as the favored El Tri overcame a surprisingly stiff effort from Guadeloupe to win 1-0 and make the Gold Cup finals. The United States won the other semifinal game, defeating Canada 2-1 in a match with a controversial ending.[2]
