Pre-race

From the Australian Grand Prix, the Formula One teams headed straight to Malaysia for a three-day test at the Sepang circuit. Spyker opted not to take part in the test. Robert Kubica was fastest in his BMW Sauber with a time of 1:36.187, just 0.115 ahead of Ferraris Kimi Räikkönen in second. Alexander Wurz was third in his Williams, just over a tenth behind Kubica.[2] Räikkönen managed to go fastest on the second day by nearly half a second, with Wurz in second and David Coulthard in the Red Bull third. Kubica was knocked down to fifth, with Lewis Hamilton in sixth in his McLaren.[3] Hamilton was fastest on the third day of testing, which took place in changeable conditions, with an overnight downfall making the track wet to begin with. The track got drier throughout the day, but another downpour hit in the afternoon. Hamilton was two tenths ahead of Mark Webber with Ralf Schumacher eight tenths behind Hamilton in third.[4] Because of the rain-affected third day, the teams agreed to extend the testing by another day.[5] After finishing bottom of the timesheets on day three,[4] Heikki Kovalainen was fastest on the final day of testing with a time of 1:35.767. Massa was second in his Ferrari, just 0.041 behind Kovalainen, with Anthony Davidson third fastest in the Super Aguri.[6] The 2007 Australian Grand Prix was a Formula One motor race held on March 18, 2007 at the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit. ... Upon arriving in Malaysia, a row over the usage of cars that the team had not designed, as required by the FIA Technical Regulations, became an issue with Spyker protesting against Scuderia Toro Rosso.[7] The Malaysian stewards rejected the protest, with the FIA stating that "it would be entirely inappropriate for the Stewards to involve themselves in a matter being dealt with at the instigation and election of the Protestor, Spyker".[8] The numerous Formula One regulations, made and enforced by the FIA and later the FISA, have changed dramatically since the first Formula One World Championship in 1950. ... McLaren had raised another technical concern after the first race of the season in Australia by requesting clarification of the rules regarding systems which allowed the front of the car's undertray to move upwards under aerodynamic loading at high speed. Autosport has said that this movement would potentially increase straight line speed.[9] The FIA introduced stringent tests on the cars at the Malaysian race to ensure floor mounting systems used by Ferrari and BMW Sauber were not in breach of the regulations. The weekend marked the first time that soft tyres had a white painted groove on them. This distinguished the difference between the softer and the harder tyres; the harder tyre does not have a white groove.[11] The white groove was applied with white paint marker pens. Felipe Massa set the pace in the first of two 90 minute practice sessions on Friday, with a time of 1:34.972, edging out Fernando Alonso in the McLaren by three tenths of a second. Alonso's team-mate, Lewis Hamilton was third, with Kimi Räikkönen just behind in fourth. Nico Rosberg, Mark Webber, Jarno Trulli, Kazuki Nakajima, Ralf Schumacher and Robert Kubica rounded out the top ten. However, it was a bad morning for Renault, with Heikki Kovalainen 14th and Giancarlo Fisichella 15th. The Hondas also had a very bad morning, with their cars languishing down in 19th and 20th places.[14] Nico Rosberg (born June 27, 1985 in Wiesbaden, Germany) is a Formula One race car driver who drives for the Williams team. ... The Hondas struggled again in Friday's second practice session. Barrichello called it "extremely frustrating",[15] as they were beaten by Super Aguri's Takuma Sato. However, Renault improved dramatically, with Fisichella second and Kovalainen third. Massa was comfortably fastest and set the pace again in the Ferrari. Räikkönen was again fourth, but the McLarens were down in 9th and 12th.[16] McLaren boss Ron Dennis played down the slow times, saying they were concentrating on "tyre evaluation".[17] Barrichello in his Ferrari at the 2003 US GP. Hamilton vindicated Ron Dennis's comments by set the fastest time in Saturday practise with a lap of 1:34.811, one tenth ahead of Massa. World Champion Alonso followed the leading two, half a second behind Massa. Kubica finished fourth, whilst Anthony Davidson did a good job for Super Aguri, finishing the practice session in 8th, 1.3 seconds down on the leaders and well ahead of the Honda A-team who finished the session in 17th and 19th place.[18]

Qualifying

Honda's poor form continued as Rubens Barrichello was knocked out in Q1, qualifying 19th. Alexander Wurz was one place behind the Brazilian, as he endured gear-selection problems in his Williams.[19] Scott Speed in the Scuderia Toro Rosso missed the cut with 17th spot, but team-mate Tonio Liuzzi made it through to Q2. Super Aguri's Anthony Davidson also failed to make the cut, qualifying 18th. He laid the blame for missing out on Q2 with Liuzzi, stating he was "pretty aware I was behind him".[20] The Spykers rounded off the back row, with their technical director Mike Gascoyne saying they "made a mistake" in missing the test at Sepang a week earlier.[21] At the front, the McLarens were first and second, with the Ferraris third and fifth, split by Robert Kubica's BMW Sauber. The threat of rain, whilst not materialising, caused all the drivers to post quick laps at the start of Qualifying 2, traditionally the slowest period. The McLarens, Ferraris and BMWs completed the top six, but the Renaults were the shock as both Fisichella and Kovalainen were knocked out, with Pat Symonds later stating that they "didn't maximise [their] chances".[22] Honda's Jenson Button was also knocked out, saying it was the "maximum we could possibly get",[23] along with Coulthard, Liuzzi and Sato. Couthard and Barrichello were deemed to have changed their engines before qualifying, resulting in both drivers being awarded a 10 place grid penalty. Closer examination, however, revealed that Coulthard changed his engine before the start of the race weekend, preventing his 10 place drop.[24] Pat Symonds (born June 11, 1953 in England) is currently the Executive Director of Engineering of the Renault Formula One team. ... In Qualifying 3, Massa snatched pole from Alonso in the dying seconds as rain began to fall, with Kimi Räikkönen completing the top three. Massa's pole marked Bridgestones 100th pole position in Formula One. Lewis Hamilton was fourth, over half a second behind the leading three, blaming the lack of pace on a rookie error made at the end of the session, saying that there were "some spots of rain on my visor, so I had to sort of let off".[25] Bridgestone Corporation ) (TYO: 5108 ) is a Japanese rubber conglomerate founded in 1931 by Shojiro Ishibashi ) in the city of Kurume, Fukuoka, Japan. ... Massa repeatedly tried to pass Hamilton. His first major attempt to pass was on lap two at turn four, but he failed to overtake the McLaren. Massa attempted another pass at turn four on lap five, but ran very wide and into the gravel.[1] He dropped to fifth, behind team-mate Räikkönen and BMW's Nick Heidfeld. After starting fifteenth, Button quickly found himself being overtaken for 17th place by team-mate Barrichello, who started from pitlane after the engine change. Alonso was 0.7 seconds faster than team-mate Hamilton every lap and was 15 seconds ahead at the first-round of pitstops.[1] Nick Heidfeld, frequently referred to as Quick Nick,[1] (born May 10, 1977) is a German Formula One auto racing driver for the BMW Sauber factory team. ...

Felipe Massa was unable to get past Nick Heidfeld after losing time due to a mistake while attempting to pass Lewis Hamilton earlier in the race.

On lap 12, Robert Kubica was the first man to pit, however he reported traction control problems four laps later and dropped down the order. Button's weekend got worse, as Takuma Sato passed the Briton. Despite the problems Button said he believed the team had made "a small step forward".[30] Image File history File links Size of this preview: 800 × 534 pixelsFull resolution (1024 × 683 pixel, file size: 367 KB, MIME type: image/jpeg) File historyClick on a date/time to view the file as it appeared at that time. ... Alonso developed radio problems prior to his first pitstop, but these were fixed during his stop. The top five remained in the same positions after the pitstops, with Alonso leading Hamilton, Räikkönen, Heidfeld and Massa. Räikkönen was stuck behind Fisichella after the first pitstops, allowing Hamilton to get away from the Ferrari and close in on Alonso at a second a lap. Hamilton set the fastest lap on lap 22 with a time of 1:36.701. He made an early second stop, enabling him to get out in front of Räikkönen.[1]

Lewis Hamilton kept Kimi Räikkönen's Ferrari at bay to score McLaren's first one-two since the 2005 Brazilian Grand Prix.

Kubica dropped to thirteenth as his traction control problem got worse,[1] and a train of cars developed behind him. Kovalainen's performance was much better than in Melbourne, and he attempted to pass Jarno Trulli for 8th. The top five again remained the same after the second round of stops, but Räikkönen was closer to the McLarens despite failing to get past.[1] Nico Rosberg, running in 6th place, retired with hydralic problems with thirteen laps to go[1] and was extremely frustrated afterwards.[31] David Coulthard also retired after problems with his brake pedal,[1] the same problem that he experienced in the Friday practice session.[32] Hamilton started to struggle in the latter stages and Räikkönen began to catch him. Hamilton, barely a second ahead of Räikkönen on the last lap, held on to finish second behind Alonso. Heidfeld and Massa secured 4th and 5th places respectively, fifteen seconds behind Räikkönen. Massa failed to overtake Heidfeld due to BMW's pit strategy.[1] Heidfeld said later "this is a fantastic experience (to beat Massa)".[33] Fisichella finished 6th (he later said it felt like a podium given the performance of the car),[34] Trulli was 7th, and rookie Kovalainen scored his first point in 8th. Wurz managed to come through from 19th to 9th after an aggresive first stint.[1] Although he claimed no points, he said later it "bodes well for Williams's chances in the rest of the season".[35]

Hamilton admitted afterwards that this was his hardest race to date,[36] while Räikkönen admitted he "did not have enough speed on the straightline to try to challenge either [Hamilton or Alonso]".[37] Räikkönen also had to protect his V8 engine from overheating, caused by a water-leak in the closing stages of the Melbourne, with Räikkönen stating Ferrari had to "play on the safe side of that engine".[38] After their disappointing Malaysian race, Ferrari boss Jean Todt stated that they "will try to do a better job" in the next round in Bahrain.[39] The Liberty V8 aircraft engine clearly shows the configuration, although modern automotive versions use a 90 degree block angle. ...
