The season's main plot follows the work of now-President David Palmer and agent Jack Bauer to stop terrorists from detonating a nuclear bomb in Los Angeles. Introduced into the situation is Kate Warner, a woman who ends up getting vital information related to CTU's mission. The date must be between 24 January 2003 and 31 March 2007 because in a conversation between Secret Service agent Aaron Pierce and President Palmer, Aaron states he has been in the Secret Service since sometime in Ronald Reagan's second term (1985-1989) and Palmer replies that is nearly twenty years. Also, the Department of Homeland Security is already in existence during that time. In addition, Gary Matheson's (valid) credit card is said to expire in March 2007. Summary

The season starts and ends at: 8:00 a.m. (LA time); the first scene of the season occurs in Seoul, South Korea (midnight, Seoul time). Seoul is the capital of South Korea and was, until 1945, the capital of all of Korea. ...

The first fifteen hours deal with finding and disposing of the nuclear bomb. After the bomb is disposed of safely, the story focuses on the United States' response to the thwarted attack, and in particular the nation's retaliation against the people responsible for planning it. A recorded conversation between a terrorist involved with the bomb and high-ranking officials of three Middle Eastern countries (which are never specified) is used to implicate those countries in the plot. However, Palmer is reluctant to order military action against them until he has absolute proof that the recording is genuine. Several members of his Cabinet then vote to relieve Palmer of his position under Section 4 of the Twenty-fifth Amendment, believing his hesitation to be a sign of indecision and weakness. The Vice President then orders military strikes against the three countries to continue. Jack, Michelle and Tony race to find the evidence that the recording is a forgery, and they eventually discover that a group of European and American businessmen fabricated it in order to wage war with the Middle East toward America so that they could benefit from rocketing oil prices that would result in the region. The strikes are called off and Palmer is reinstated as President after the proof is produced, thanks largely to his ex-wife Sherry Palmer (who risks her life). The eight cabinet members and Vice President tender their resignations (Palmer does not accept them), and Palmer then tells his staff that he believes that the strictest evidence of hostile intent is required before waging war. The President does relieve his Chief of Staff, Mike Novick, who did not support him until the eleventh hour, despite being his most trusted confidante. Like in Season One, the Season Two ends with a surprise twist. The nuclear bomb situation is resolved without massive loss of life, but President Palmer collapses after being attacked with a biological weapon by Mandy, presumably in an assassination attempt. Viewers were forced to wait until the third season to see whether Palmer survived the attack. The sudden shift from a nuclear to biological threat also foreshadows the third season, which initially centers on the threat of an engineered virus being set loose on the public. Unresolved Plots

There were several large plot threads left unresolved from the second season into the third and fourth seasons, most notably the characters of "Max" and Trepkos, two men who seemed to be the driving force behind the day's events, as well as President Palmer's assassination attempt. How the assassination attempt ties into a war for oil is something that never quite fit together, and many have suspected that they may have had some larger and more sinister goal in mind. They were never seen again, and the only clue to their fate is a cryptic hint given by Wayne Palmer in the premiere of season 3^{[citation needed]}. However, some of the events directly preceding season 3 were chronicled in the video game 24: The Game, released in March 2006. Also, the injury of Lynne Kresge is not addressed further and Mike Novick, who is arguably at fault is not brought to justice, yet. • The geographic coordinates given to CTU by Jack as the plane is crashing (30*34'44" N, 119*09'05" W) are said to be a river bed where the plane can safely land. However, those coordinates are actually located on the face of a mountain in Ventura County.
• Continuity error in the second episode of this season, where Michelle Dessler is briefing Jack on his mission whilst sitting next to him in a helicopter, as Jack is being flown to his destination to start an undercover operation. The helicopter drops Jack off, who gets into a car and drives off, promptly calling CTU on his phone. George Mason answers the phone and walks over to a nearby workstation where Tony Almeida and Michelle are working, just seconds after she was seen with Jack in the helicopter.
• When Jack tries to infiltate a terrorist cell, he shoots a state witness and then, using a simple hack-saw, chops his head. When the severed head is shown the wounds are not consistened with a hack-saw, but to a circular saw instead, since the cut is clean and lined, whereas the hack-saw would have ripped the flesh and the cut would have been semi-citcular.
• In episode 4, Jack shoots the crew that bombed CTU. During the shootout, he shoots a man in a car through the windshield and shatters the left side window, and then drives off with it. In a shot, where Jack is driving the car downhill, all windows are intact and rolled. The next shot, the windshield is damaged again, though this time, in the wrong places.
• In episode 23, Kim, while back at the house of wife killer Gary Matheson gathering her belongings, is chased into a bedroom by Matheson. It takes Kim exactly five seconds to run into the room, close the door, pull down the attic door, walk up and pull the door back up.
• In the climactic shootout Jack attempts to use a Walther PPK only to find it is out of bullets — oddly so, given that it had apparently been fired only a few times. The scene had originally showed the gun being fired the proper number of times to empty it; however, the scene was cut for time.
