Encyclopedia > 25 O'Clock

25 O'Clock refers to both a mini-album which was the first release of the Dukes of Stratosphear (a side project by the members of XTC) as well as the title song from that release. Joined by XTC member Dave Gregory's brother on drums, the pseudonymous Dukes indulged in the stylstic tropes of 60's psychedelia, particularly the British variety. The Dukes of Stratosphear was a pseudonym used by the British rock band XTC in the early 1980s, used on two albums which drew upon influences of 1960s psychedelic music such as the Beatles, Pink Floyd and the Pretty Things. ... Released on April Fools Day, 1985, the mini-album was a tongue in cheek homage to the heydey of Psychedelic rock. Several of the tracks were deliberately made to sound like individual bands (like the Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd sound of "Bike Ride to The Moon"). Others were simply a pastiche of the styles of the period as a whole. — Mark Twain April Fools Day or All Fools Day is a notable day, though not of its own right a holiday, celebrated in many countries on April 1. ... This article is about the year. ... Psychedelic music draws its inspiration from the experience of mind-altering drugs such as cannabis, psilocybin, mescaline, ecstasy and especially LSD. Characteristic features of the style include modal melodies, lengthy instrumental solos, esoteric lyrics and trippy special effects such as reversed, distorted, delayed and/or phased sounds. ... Pink Floyd (formed in 1965 in Cambridge, England) is a British progressive rock band, noted for their progressive compositions, thoughtful lyrics, sonic experimentation, album art and live shows. ...

The material on the 25 O'Clock mini-album was eventually merged with the 1987 album Psonic Psunspot for release as Chips From The Chocolate Fireball - An Anthology on CD.
