January 1 is the first day of the calendar year in both the Julian and Gregorian calendars. January 1, 2004 Irelands Roman Catholic and Protestant boy scouts organisations merge after nearly a century of division, in spite of efforts by the Roman Catholic bishops to block the merger. Margareta Leijonhufvud (January 1, 1516 - August 26, 1551) was the consort of King Gustav I and a Queen of Sweden from 1536 to 1551.

January 1759 in a small cottage by the wayside near the Bridge of Doon, two miles from Ayr. January 1327, is the date of the deposition of the silly king, Edward II, whose reign of twenty years had been little else than one continual wrangle regarding the worthless royal favourites, Gaveston and Despencer. The month of January is memorable as that of the celebrated Hampton Court Conference, held at the beginning of the reign of James I in England (1604), for the regulation of questions of religion, agitated by the violent opposition between the High Church party and the Puritans.
