The 29th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (1st Italian) was formed in September 1944, when Waffen-Grenadier-Brigade der SS (italienische Nr. 1) was upgraded to a division. It was given the number 29 when the Waffen-Grenadier Division der SS (Russische Nr 1) did not reach divisional size.
