Former BBC Radio Solent presenter John Piper launched the station in 1980, with the words "Good Morning Hampshire, Good Morning Dorset". At that time it was a "full service" station with music, personalities, phone-ins, and a local news service.

The station headed into the millenium, gaining its biggest ever RAJAR figures with Richie, Martyn & Emma on the Morning Crew, followed by Katherine Orman presenting 10am-2pm and Adrian Clarkson on Drive 2-7pm.
