NBA 2K was Sega's first foray into the basketball game market since the Genesis' heyday; it was also the first title to legitimately challenge EA Sports' NBA Live series for console hoops supremacy.
The graphics, animation, sound, and 3D arena-environment in 2K are generally considered far beyond anything gamers had ever seen in a basketball simulation at the present.
The 2K series, developed by Visual Concepts, began under the banner of Sega Sports until it was later sold (along with Visual Concepts) to Take-Two Interactive.
