2MBS FM is a Sydney music radio station operated by the Music Broadcasting Society of New South Wales Co-Operative Limited. Launched on December 15, 1974, it was the first continuously-operating licensed Australia and remains the largest public radio broadcaster in the country.
The station broadcasts to the greater Sydney region at a frequency of 102.5 MHz from a 50 kilowatt (ERP) transmitter located atop Governor Philip Tower, in Sydney's central business district. Its operations are conducted mostly by volunteers, supported by funding from subscribers and commercial sponsors.
Approximately 80 percent of 2MBS's on-air music content is from the Western classical and related traditions, and the remainder is made up of jazz, blues and non-mainstream contemporary music. 2MBS has a loose affiliation with a number of similar independently owned and operated stations in other parts of Australia, including 3MBS FM Melbourne, 4MBS FM Brisbane, 5MBS FM Adelaide and Artsound Canberra.

2MBS is Australia’s first licensed FM radio station (1974), and broadcasts fine music - 24 hours a day 7 days a week - to the whole of the Sydney metropolitan basin and beyond.
Known as the classical music connoisseurs’ radio station, 2MBS is a non-profit organisation; volunteer-run (with only a handful of staff); predominantly subscriber supported; and reaches approximately 160,000 listeners a week.
2MBS develops young talent through two youth development schemes: its Young Performers Award, which culminates in the national finals held on a yearly basis; and its Young Composers Award, which is also run annually, in conjunction with the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra.
