2R is a pop group in Hong Kong. The group consists of Race Wong and Rosanne Wong, two sisters raised in Singapore. Rosanne is the older sister. Some critics have accused 2R of being an imitation of the popular Twins and have criticised their accented Cantonese. However, they do have a dedicated fan base and their second album “2R Revolution” has been reasonably successful. Biography

Both sisters were born in Malaysia but moved to Singapore with their family at very early ages. Rosanne was born on June 30, 1979, and Race was born on September 7, 1982. Before entering show business, the sisters studied at Curtin University of Technology in Perth, Western Australia. The pair were discovered by an agent in a singing contest and were brought to Hong Kong and later signed by Universal Music. A Tough Beginning

Although 2R has yet to achieve the level of success that the Twins have, they have arguably passed through a much more difficult time. The agent that initially signed the sisters had arranged an apartment for them in Hong Kong and was able to get them a few modelling jobs but nothing substantial materialised. Meanwhile, the sisters were working on improving their Cantonese while recording their first album in the hopes of attracting more fans. However, their agent suddenly disappeared and the sisters were burdened with several months of unpaid rent and were eventually evicted. With no agent and no money, the sisters turned to their parents who helped them pay off their debt and found them a new home. Soon afterwards they were signed by Universal Music.

Comparison to Twins

When 2R began their career, Twins had already established themselves in the Cantopop business. Ostensibly, the two groups have some similarities and are often compared to each other. 2R and Twins produce a similar style of music, target the same audiences, and both groups consist of two young female members. Although 2R has yet to achieve the level of Twins’success, these comparisons have still lead to rivalry between the fans of the two groups. Several incidences were reported where fans of the each group had attempted to sabotage the websites of the other's.

Separate Success

Although 2R usually perform together, the sisters exhibit two different styles. Rosanne the elder sister is more mature and elegant, while Race is more youthful and energetic. However it is Race who has experienced the greater success with appearances in various commercials, magazine covers, and movies. In the movie “Colour of Sound” (地下鐵), both Rosanne and Race made cameo appearances but only Race’s scene made it to the big screen. They also starred in the Wong Jing’s movie “Love Is But A Stupid Thing” (精裝追女仔2004) where Race played a major role while Rosanne’s character was limited to just a few on screen appearances. It wasn’t until “Ab-Normal Beauty” that both sisters played significant parts. Despite their separate levels of successes, the relationship between the sisters remains strong and both have said that they will continue their music career together as a group. Future Uncertain

The future success of 2R is still uncertain. Their album sales have not been extremely promising and their accented Cantonese remains their biggest hurdle and one that may eventually end their career, although many have noticed a tremendous improvement in their second album. With new groups forming every year, the competition for 2R will only become more fierce.
