The series was dubbed into several languages and became an instant success in some countries, such as Portugal, Brazil, Spain and Israel. In Hebrew, the series is called HaLev, meaning The Heart (the name of the novel which the series is based on). In some European and in Latin American countries the series is simply known as Marco.

Plot

During a depression in the year 1881 in Genoa, Italy, Marco's mother goes to Argentina to work as domestic. However, his mother's letters stop coming after an indication that she is sick. 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother details Marco's journey to find his mother. I finally reached the end of 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother, and I'm left with that same empty, dull ache I had when I finished Anne of Green Gables.
3000 Leagues in Search of Mother deserves to be seen in North America (alongside Heidi and Anne, of course).
3000 Leagues, aka Marco, was the 1976 season of World Masterpiece Theatre, the groundbreaking television series that was the jewel of Japanese animation.

Unbeknown to him his family is heavily in debt and his mother is going to Argentina to find work.
Even Marco’s pet monkey, a ploy often used to humorous effect in lesser series is used to underpin the great sadness and loss that fills 3000 Leagues, the small tricks and normally amusing ploys used by his pit become hollow and empty gestures.
3000 Leagues is an excellent series that is easy to watch and is rewarding from the very start.
