3KND (South East Indegenous Media Association Inc). 3KND was one of the later entrants into the temporary community broadcasting period in Melbourne, as part of the lead up to the granting of four additional community licences for the City. KND represents the aboriginal communities within Greater Melbourne, and was granted the only AM licence available for community radio at that time. From the 3KND website: 3NKD, Melbourne's first Indigenous owned and managed AM radio station, hit the airwaves in June 2003. Some people say 3KND is long overdue as a voice of Melbourne's Indigenous community. It's required 13 years of discussion, contemplation, proposals, meetings and a lot of hard work. Five years have now passed since the first test broadcast in 1998 and the South Eastern Indigenous Media Association (SEIMA) had to beat 22 other aspirants to get the licence. Now 3KND is here, and with it comes entertainment, information, opportunity and a dedicated channel in the spirit of the community! In other words, 3KND was well worth waiting for!
