3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, along with the 5th Marine Regiment, was first organized on June 8, 1917 as the United States prepared for World War I. The battalion was composed of four companies; the 16th, 20th, 45th and 47th^[1]. On August 19, 1942, John Harold Branic, a sergeant from Lima Company was killed fighting the Japanese at the Battle of Guadalcanal. His commanding officer was also killed and no record of his whereabouts was filed with headquarters. For 60+ years Branic was listed as missing in action until a local islander discovered some human remains and a ring inscribed "JHB". A two-year investigation culminating in a positive DNA match with a distant cousin, resulted in a positive identification in August 2006.
