It originally covered "central-northern California" sans the area code 916 portion. It is now associated with the city of San Francisco, and also covers Marin County and the northernmost portion of San Mateo County. This original area covered by the 415 area code has been subdivided, over the course of the decades since 1947, into Area code 209 (the Central Valley) in a flash-cut sometime during 1958; Area code 408 (the San Jose area) and Area code 707 (northern coastal California) in a flash-cut sometime during 1959; Area code 510 (the inner East Bay, including Oakland) on September 2, 1991; Area code 559 (the Central Valley) on November 14, 1998; Area code 650 (the San Francisco Peninsula/San Mateo County) on August 2, 1997; Area code 831 (the Salinas/Monterey area) on July 11, 1998; and Area code 925 (the outer East Bay, including Walnut Creek) on March 14, 1998.
