The 434th Special Operations Wing, also known as the 434th Air Refueling Wing, has been around since January 30, 1943 with the creation of the 434th Troop Carrier Group which was then activated on February 9, 1943. It was soon deactivated after the end of World War II on July 31, 1946. Background Information

On March 15, 1947, it was reactivated, put on reserve and redesignated as the 434th Trooper Carrier Wing on July 1, 1949. The Korean War foresaw the activation of the wing and put under the command of Tactical Air Command. It was once again called to active duty during the Cuban Missile Crisis. It was redesignated the 434th Tactical Airlift Wing on July 1, 1967 and called to active duty during the Vietnam War. It remained active until December 1, 1969. The unit was later reactivated as the 434th Special Operations Wing on January 15, 1971. Later on it would be redesignated as the 434th Tactical Fighter Wing in 1973, and the 434th Air Refueling Win in 1987. Because of the Persian Gulf War it was called back into active duty as the 434th Wing on June 1, 1992. It was once again redesignated as the 434th Air Refueling Wing in the early 1990s. The 434th Air Refueling Wing is a key unit in the Air Force Reserve.
