On 2005 Jan 12 UT, the 38 km diameter asteroid (458) Hercynia will occult a 11.3 mag star in the constellation Orion for observers along a path across Australia.
In the case of an occultation, the combined light of the asteroid and the star will drop by 2.2 mag to 13.3 mag (the magnitude of the asteroid) for at most 5.2 seconds.
Rich Keen, observing near Boulder, Colorado, reports: "Despite low altitude, cirrus clouds, and city lights of Denver to my southeast, I did observe the occultation by Hercynia.
