Hippocrates - encyclopedia article about Hippocrates. (1929 words)
The first use of therapeutic exercise for the treatment of disease and maintenance of health is credited to him, and he is believed to have been one of the tutors of Hippocrates.
It is usually assumed to have been founded at the beginning of the 3rd century BC during the reign of Ptolemy II of Egypt after his father had set up the temple of the Muses, the Musaeum (whence we get "Museum").
It is a forerunner of the traction devices used in modern orthopedics, as well as of the rack, an instrument of torture.
