The screenplay was written by Hill, Roger Spottiswoode, Larry Gross, Steven E. de Souza and Jeb Stuart (uncredited). Murphy and Nolte play a convict and a cop who team up to catch a cop-killer. Convicted robber Albert Ganz (James Remar) escapes from prison with the help of his partner Billy Bear (Sonny Landham). Jack Cates (Nick Nolte) is an alcoholic, chain-smoking San Francisco cop. He and two of his fellow officers VanZant (Jonathan Banks) and Algren (James Keane) go to the Walden Hotel to investigate G. Jack goes to a prison and visits Ganz and Billy's former partner Reggie Hammond (Eddie Murphy). Jack decides to parole Reggie Hammond for 48 hours so Reggie can help him find Ganz and Billy.
