480p is the shorthand name for a video mode. The p stands for progressive scan, i.e. non-interlaced, the 480 for a vertical resolution of 480 lines, usually with a horizontal resolution of 640 pixels and an aspect ratio of 4:3; that is standard-definition television (SDTV). The frame rate (in the interlaced case the field rate) is usually 30 or 60 hertz and can be given explicitly after the letter. It is usually used in former NTSC countries (North America, Japan) for NTSC can have 480p30 image resolution, but analogue and interlaced. With doubled temporal resolution, 480p60 is considered enhanced-definition television (EDTV). It can be transported by both major digital television formats, ATSC and DVB, 480p30 also on DVD. 480p is the shorthand name for a video display resolution.
The ATSC digital television standards define 480p with either 704x480 (non-square sampling) or 640x480 (square sampling) pixel resolutions, at 24, 30, or 60 Hertz frame rates.
A 16:9 aspect ratio is defined at 720x480 pixels, using non-square, anamorphic sampling.

There is a lot of understandable confusion over component video, and whether progressive scan 480p output from a DVD player is better than interlaced output, 480i.
Frequently, as you've probably heard, the 480p signal from the DVD player is better.
Depending on the DVD player and projector that you have, you may or may not see a difference between 480p and 480i.
