New Zealand general elections occur when the Prime Minister requests a dissolution of parliament and therefore a general election.
New Zealand can claim to be the first country in the world to have granted women's suffrage, although the accuracy of this depends on the definitions used.
On the right are the number of seats won by the four most significant parties in New Zealand's history (the Liberal Party and the Reform Party, which later merged to form the National Party, and the Labour Party), as well as the number won by other candidates (either independents or members of smaller political parties).
