Plot summary
Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. Matt is suffering from writer's block. He's waiting for a "4am miracle" and explains that at that late hour, when his body is fighting to sleep, he happens to consistently get a burst of creativity. Matthew Albie is a fictional character on the U.S. TV series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, played by Matthew Perry. ...
Matt is told that a lawyer, Mary Tate, from the firm Gage/Whitney is coming to meet him as she is defending the show and the network against a claim from an ex-writer who purports that she was working in a "hostile environment" and was possibly sexually harassed. Matt takes Mary to the writing room and explains to her the inner workings of the show, saying that he believes that she lost her job because she was a poor writer. The other writers agree. Danny is working on the other crucial aspects of the show and when Jordan visits him, he asks her to rest. He mocks the electronic practice baby that she carries around with her, and she challenges him to look after it in her stead. He agrees to the challenge and then goes about feeding, patting, walking and doing whatever necessary to take care of the dummy baby. However, as it begins to distract him, he gives it to Simon amd Tom and asks them to take care of it. Unfortunately, they use it as the test object for a fake guillotine and accidentally behead the practice baby. A furious Danny then commands Cal to fix it as he does not plan to admit defeat to Jordan. He gives Jordan the practice baby, which is programmed to believe that it was properly fed and looked after, but then when she tries to wake it up, the eyes pop out and the head ejects itself. He pinpoints that her motherly rage after the fracas proves that she will be a good mother and promises to assist her better with the real baby. Simon and Tom were distracted because Simon has confessed to Tom that he had an intimate relationship with the ex-writer who is suing the studio. Afraid that he may be partly the cause for the sexual harassment claim and unwilling to risk his job, he does not say anything; however, with Tom's encouragement and Danny's backing, he confesses this to Mary. She allays his fears by pointing out that it is a case of mistaken identity (the woman whom Simon had a relationship with was not the ex-writer). Matt's writer's block continues and he constantly asks after the whereabouts of Harriet. Danny admonishes him for his refusal to move past the end of their relationship but promises to get her back soon. Hannah Harriet Hayes is a fictional character on the US television series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, played by Sarah Paulson . ...
Harriet is working on her movie with her current boyfriend Luke. She has a hard time after finding out from Danny that Matt is unable to work without her and also feels guilty about portraying Anita Pallenberg (her role) in a negative light. After talking with Luke, she tells him about her break-up with Matt the previous week. She believes that she was too hard on Matt but Luke, angered that she came to him after breaking up with Matt and hence seemingly being second to Matt, refuses to empathise with her and then forces her to work for a longer period of time. When he criticises Matt openly in front of Harriet, she decides that she does not like his attitude and promptly goes back to Studio 60. Luke Brandon Scott (born June 25, 1978 in De Leon Springs, Florida) is a major league baseball left fielder who currently plays for the Houston Astros. ...

Mary asks Matt if his relationship with Harriet is affecting his work, which could possibly affect the studio's ratings and then refers him to an excerpt from the ex-writer's claims that attests to a conversation in the writers' room about Harriet that referred to her in a degrading manner. Matt, although upset and angry after reading this, tells Mary that such conversation may help stimulate good writing. As Mary leaves, she gives Matt her phone number and gives him the opportunity to ask her out on a date when he is over Harriet, saying she is impressed with the honesty in Matt's character. Matt returns to his office and although it is 4am, he is still up working. As he reads aloud the lines to one of his sketches, Harriet returns and completes the rest of the line. She offers to help "unstick" Matt. An amazed Matt whispers "4am miracle".
