Plot

Henry Roth (Adam Sandler), a marine-life veterinarian living in Hawaii, meets Lucy Whitmore (Drew Barrymore) in a cafe and they develop a relationship. Lucy was an art teacher before the accident. However, it soon emerges that Lucy suffers from anterograde amnesia due to a car accident she was in a year earlier, rendering her incapable of forming new short-term memories. Her condition leaves her with no memory of anything between the day of the accident and the present as she cannot convert short-term memories into long-term memories as she sleeps. She believes every day to be October 13, 2002. Her father and brother attempt to reenact that October 13th every day, so she doesn't know that there even was an accident. Henry therefore must find new and imaginative ways of winning Lucy over every day, to the disapproval of her father and brother. The father and brother soon find out that she is seeing him because every time she meets him she sings Beach Boys songs while she paints the garage. They allow Henry to see Lucy, and the next day he shows up with a video tape explaining the accident and everything that has happened since. One day, Lucy wakes up to find Henry in her bed and attacks him. She then overhears her doctor and Henry talking about how he will never achieve his dream to explore the artic. Lucy then breaks up with Henry and burns all her journal entries about him, so her memory of him is completely erased. Henry is unable to move on with his life, but he decides to go on the artic expedition anyway. Lucy's father gives him a going away present, a Beach Boys CD, which Henry takes as a sign that Lucy has remembered him. He races back to a ward for people who have memory problems, where she is teaching art classes. He asks if he remembers her, and she doesn't, but she asks him to come into her studio. Her studio is filled with pictures of Henry in hundreds to different styles. She tells Henry that she doesn't know why she's painted them, but she dreams about him every night. They proceed to kiss. Then there is a flash forward and Lucy wakes up in a strange bed with a video tape looking at her saying "Good Morning Lucy". She watches it and you see her crying as she relives her accident. Then it shows Henry and her's wedding. She then looks out the window, and is surprised to learn that she's in the artic. She comes out to find her father, Henry, and her daughter. Overtaken by events

One notable coincidence of Henry's first video is when the screen says "Red Sox Win World Series" and then follows with "Just Kidding." This is a reference to the 2003 American League Championship Series, as the film was released in February 2004. Later in that year, however, the Boston Red Sox would indeed win the World Series. Coincidentally, Barrymore's next film would be Fever Pitch, which co-stars Jimmy Fallon as an obsessed Boston Red Sox fan and which takes place during the 2004 baseball season. Blu-ray Review: 50 First Dates | High Def Digest (1570 words)
So that makes it a bit of a shame that they picked '50 First Dates' as their follow-up vehicle to 'The Wedding Singer,' because even a couple as charming as them can't save a pedestrian, derivative script.
Note that like all of Sony's other Blu-ray titles, '50 First Dates' features the "Seamless Menu Navigation" feature, which is the much-touted ability of both of the next-gen HD formats to allow users to access a disc's extras in real-time, while the movie is playing and without interrupting playback.
Of course, '50 First Dates' is not exactly the A-list title that will get mainstream consumers to jump onboard the Blu-ray love train, but it does prove the format can deliver on the bottom line.
DVD Verdict Review - 50 First Dates (2321 words)
Henry falls in love, and at first it's just a game, a variation on his dating modus operandi; Lucy doesn't remember from day to day, so he doesn't have to lie—all he has to do is have her like him for just one day, then he can start all over.
In the Sandler oeuvre, 50 First Dates is probably the least typical of his films next to Punch-Drunk Love, and that's a good thing—it's probably the most enjoyable film he's been in since Billy Madison.
50 First Dates is a good sign that his career is maturing and that he'll have longevity as a romcom lead and expand his fanbase outside teenage males (whether they be "teenage" in years or temperament).
