Much of the distances popularity is due to the challenge it offers to both beginner runners and accomplished professionals. It is a distance race that also demands a great deal of speed, and the combination make it attractive to many. The world record for men is 12:37.35 by Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele. The womens record is 14:24.68 by Elvan Abeylegesse.
