British 56th (1/1st London) Division - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (287 words)
Originally called the "1st London Division" it was designated the 56th Division in 1915 and referred to as the "1/1st London Division" after the raising of the second-line 58th (2/1st London) Division.
In January 1916 the division was deployed as a unit to France where it served on the Western Front for the remainder of the war.
The division's insignia was the sword from the coat of arms of the City of London.
