The September 11, 2001 attacks (often referred to as 9/11—pronounced "nine eleven") were a series of coordinated suicide terrorist attacks upon the United States , predominantly targeting civilians, carried out on Tuesday, September 11, 2001 . On September 20, 2001 , the president spoke before the nation and a joint session of the United States Congress, regarding the events of that day, the intervening nine days of rescue and recovery efforts, and his intent in response to those events. The goals of this investigation, completed on April 6 , 2005 , were to investigate the building construction, the materials used, and the technical conditions that contributed to the outcome of the WTC disaster.
