The original plan was for this line to cross over the Queensboro Bridge, which spans the East River roughly over the 60th Street Tunnel. However, weight issues led to the tunnel construction. Originally, the tunnel connected the BMT Broadway Line to the Queensboro Plaza station, where trains could continue along the BMT Astoria Line or the IRT Flushing Line. Eventually, the connection to the Flushing Line was severed.
