Encyclopedia > 6R10DB9

6R10DB9 is a small asteroid, with a diameter of about one meter, temporarily orbiting the Earth, with a period of about three months. Due to the small size of the object, confirmation whether it is in fact a natural body, and therefore a second Moon, is not expected until the object's next perigee in June 2007. Even if it confirmed as natural, the "second Moon" designation would only be temporary. It would likely be classified as a Near-Earth Asteroid or possibly an Aten asteroid. It has been suggested that minor planet be merged into this article or section. ... m. ... Adjectives: Terrestrial, Terran, Telluric, Tellurian, Earthly Atmosphere Surface pressure: 101. ... Apparent magnitude: up to -12. ... Perigee is the point at which an object in orbit around the Earth makes its closest approach to the Earth. ... Near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) are asteroids whose orbits are close to Earths orbit. ... The Aten asteroids are a group of near-Earth asteroids, named after the first of the group to be discovered (2062 Aten, discovered January 7, 1976 by Eleanor F. Helin). ...

The object was discovered 14 Sept 2006 by the 27-inch Schmidt camera of the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona. Preliminary orbital calculations indicated it was captured by Earth's gravity from solar orbit of a period of about 11 months, which is similar to that of many spent rocket boosters dating to the Apollo program of the 1960s and early 1970s. However, later analysis shows the body is not affected by the pressures of solar radiation and must be a dense rocky body or at least regularly shaped. For the Manfred Mann album, see 2006 (album). ... Catalina Sky Survey is a project to discover comets and asteroids, and to search for near_earth objects. ... The Yarkovsky-OKeefe-Radzievskii-Paddack effect, or YORP effect for short, is a second-order variation on the Yarkovsky effect which causes a small body (such as an asteroid) to spin up or down. ...

The object is predicted to make four Earth orbits before being ejected after the June 2007 perigee. At that perigee, it will actually dip inside the Moon's orbit and more accurate measurements can be made.
