Interstate 78 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (647 words)
Interstate 78 is an interstate highway in the eastern United States.
Originally, I-78 was going to cross Manhattan as the Lower Manhattan Expressway, and continue through Queens and Brooklyn to John F. Kennedy International Airport and then onto The Bronx, but those plans were halted due to a combination of public outcry and cost.
However, a new I-78 was built south of the cities, and I-378 was downgraded to a similar-numbered state route.
Interstate 78 (New Jersey) (3119 words)
Soon after I-78 was proposed in 1957, city officials in Newark fought for more than a decade to have the expressway routed around the city's Weequahic section.
In return for ending its opposition to I-78, the state gave Union County 70 acres of nearby state-owned land, plus $3.6 million for construction of new equestrian facilities and a Boy Scout camp.
A new three-lane carriageway was constructed to accommodate the eastbound lanes of I-78.
