78Derngate was not only Mackintoshs last significant commission, but also a most unusual and intriguing one, which helps modify the modern mythical interpretation of his career.
78Derngate is a house of the 1820s in the centre of a short red-brick late Georgian terrace.
While the new front door of no 78, with its decorative coloured glass and details similar to those on the west wing of the Glasgow School of Art is clearly Mackintoshs work, the adjacent projecting bay window with its leaded-light windows may well be Andersons.
In 1916 his father bought an early nineteenth-century terraced house at 78Derngate, which he gave to his son on his marriage in 1917.
Both 78 and its neighbor 80 Derngate were bought by the local government authority in 1996, and it was decided to open the former to the public following preservation and restoration, and to open the latter as a museum.
This work is now complete, and 78 Derngate--the last major commission undertaken by Mackintosh--is open by reservation to the public from March to November, Saturdays to Thursdays by telephoning 44-1604-603407.
