Denied once, the Baltimore Stallions made good on their second chance at a Grey Cup. For the first time in 83 years, the Cup will leave Canada. It's destination is still to be determined, but what no one can argue is the Stallions were not full value for their 37-20 win over the Calgary Stampeders at a blustery Taylor Field in Regina. The Cup's stay in Canada officially ended at 8:27 EST just as the winds at Taylor Field which gusted up to 85 km/h during the game died down. No one was enjoying the glow of victory more than Stallions rush end Elfrid Payton, who celebrated his first Grey Cup champagne shower after making it to the show in four consecutive years. "This game was won in the trenches," Payton said. "You know that. They couldn't stop our running game. Our offensive line blew them off the ball. "It wasn't even close," said Payton, still unable to keep the smile off his face. "You can't say they got this play and they got that play. We beat them in every phase of the game. We're taking this Cup back to Baltimore." The Stallions opened the game with a Grey Cup record courtesy of Chris Wright's 82-yard punt return just 2:20 into the game. Calgary responded scoring the next 13 points, including a rare touchdown for Marvin Pope on a three-yard pass from Doug Flutie but that would be the last time the Stampeders held a lead. 1984: BCs Sensational Doug Flutie Stuns Miami Douglas Richard Flutie (born on October 23, 1962) is a former professional gridiron football player in the National Football League (American football) and Canadian Football League (Canadian football). ...
Despite going against the wind for the entire second quarter the Stallions scored 16 points to take a 10-point lead into the locker room at halftime. A big part of that lead was again the result of the Stallions special teams. O.J. Brigance's blocked of a Tony Martino punt with just under eight minutes to go in the half was scooped up by Alvin Walton at the five and he dove over for the second touchdown by that unit. "I believe they spent most of their practice time working on their defence and they forgot about special teams," said running back Mike Pringle, who finished the game with 137 yards rushing. Pringle called the victory a complete team effort and suggested there was some redemption for some of his offensive teammates who don't get the same credit he has received this season. "It was just like we planned it," Pringle said. "We thought Calgary would come out and concentrate on Mike Pringle and forget about the other 11 people on our offence." Mike Pringle (b. ...
While he didn't mention any names, Stallions quarterback Tracy Ham, who was named the game's most valuable player was definitely one of the teammates to whom Pringle referred. Playing in his third Grey Cup as a starter and looking for his first win, Ham shook the monkey off his back in fine fashion throwing for 213 yard and rushing for a touchdown of his own. "I don't know if I can ever shake some of the things (the media) says about me," Ham said. "I'm a blue-collar quarterback. I just go out and work hard. My teammates are confident in who I am and that's what counts." Stamps slotback Dave Sapunjis was the game's outstanding Canadian hauling in eight passes for 113 yards. He worked hard to find a bright spot in the loss. "I didn't want to ever see the Grey Cup go south of the border, but maybe it's good for the States to have a little part of CFL interest," he said.
