Plot Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. After the sudden death of their mother, Su-mi and her younger sister Su-yeon return to their family home after spending time being treated for psychological issues. Su-mi has a deep-seated resentment of her father, Mu-hyeon, but shows kindness and concern for the shy and untalkative Su-yeon. Since they've been gone, the distant and seemingly uncaring Mu-hyeon has taken a new wife, a rather unstable woman by the name of Eun-ju. At first, the sisters are only slightly uncomfortable around their new stepmother, but night brings with it the realization that Eun-ju is the modern incarnation of the archetypical wicked stepmother. She throws out mementos of the girls' mother, verbally abuses Su-mi and at one point begins to lock Su-yeon inside the large wardrobe in her bedroom. A stepfamily is the family one acquires when a parent marries someone new. ...

Strange occurrences also begin to happen inside the huge, darkly-lit home, including ghostly apparitions, Eun-ju's pet bird showing up dead in Su-yeon's bed for no reason, and dreams of blood and running through the woods. They may be paranormal, or the product of Su-mi overactive imagination, but no-one is to say which. All of these events, both real and imaginary, lead up to a revelation that will affect all three women's lives (and Su-mi's sense of reality) forever.
