The first Laubin oboe was made in 1931. The creation of oboes began as a hobby, as Alfred Laubin was a very busy performer. It was not until about twenty years later that the idea of selling instruments for a living began to be considered, and it was not easy to break into the oboe market with an unfamiliar name. By the late 1950's production had grown from approximately twelve instruments a year, to about seventy. In 1956, Paul Laubin joined the business, doing repair work at first.
From 1958 to 1968 Laubin oboes were made in Long Island City, N.Y. at a shop called Pensel-Mueller. These two factors account for the high production in those years. The dealth of Alfred Laubin in October, 1976 left the shop shorthanded, and a decline in production followed. However, in recent years production has been on the increase, due to the growing productivity of an apprentice hired in 1974.
