Encyclopedia > A1 road (Northern Ireland)

The A1 is a major road in Northern Ireland. It runs from Belfast to the border near Newry, where it becomes the N1 road, via Lisburn and Banbridge Northern Ireland is one of four constituent parts of the United Kingdom. ... Belfast (Béal Feirste in Irish) is the largest city in and capital of both Northern Ireland and Ulster, and the second largest city on the island of Ireland. ... Newry is a city in Northern Ireland. ... The Boyne River Bridge, one of the main engineering features of the M1 motorway, crosses the River Boyne west of Drogheda. ... Lisburn (Lios na gCearrbhach in Irish) is a city in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, with a population of about 110,000. ... Banbridge (Droichead na Banna in Irish) is a town in County Down, Northern Ireland. ...

Astonishingly for a road of its strategic importance, the A1 is not fully dual carriageway (yet!) and of the parts that are dual carriageway, most of the junctions are dangerous as they involve right turning movements across the busy central median.

However, several schemes have been completed as measures to improve safety. A flyover has been constructed at the busy Loughbrickland Road junction in Banbridge and an Underpass at the very dangerous Hillsborough road junction in Dromore was completed in June 2005. Additionally, the Roads Service of Northern Ireland has planned to provide four further Grade Separated junctions. These schemes are located at Dromore Road Hillsborough, Banbridge Road Dromore, Dublin Road/Grovehill Road Loughbrickland and Dromore Road Banbridge. This is a disambiguation page — a navigational aid which lists other pages that might otherwise share the same title. ... Banbridge (Droichead na Banna in Irish) is a town in County Down, Northern Ireland. ... Dublin (Irish: Baile Átha Cliath1),is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Ireland, located2 near the midpoint of Irelands east coast, at the mouth of the River Liffey and at the centre of the Dublin region3. ... Banbridge (Droichead na Banna in Irish) is a town in County Down, Northern Ireland. ...

As further measures to improve safety and journey times, it is envisaged that a central median safety barrier be constructed from the A1's junction with the M1 at Sprucefield to the end of the present stretch of Dual Carriageway at Loughbrickland. this will also involve the closing of many of the dual carriageway's central cross-over points.

Presently, two dualling schemes are underway on the A1: A 9km stetch of largely on-line dualling is taking place between Loughbrickland and Beech Hill and is scheduled for completion in early 2006. Additionally, as part of the NI-ROI cross border link, a stetch of 5 km partially off-line/partially on line stetch of high quality dual carriageway (includes a hard shoulder, central median safety barrier and no right turn movements) is being constructed between Cloghoge roundabout (southern end of the Newry bypass) and the border. Newry is a city in Northern Ireland. ...

The scheme that will complete the improvements to the A1, namely the dualling of the road between Beech Hill and Cloghoge, is currently going through statutory processes and construction is hoped to commence in 2008. This scheme will involve the building of a largely off line new dual carriageway and includes provision for a central median safety barrier, hard shoulder and a number of grade separated interchanges.

One remaining scheme(s) that may occur to the A1 would be in the vicinity of Sprucefield/Hillsborough. This would involve grade separation of the current Hillsborough roundabout and also a new high quality free flowing interchange linking the A1 with the M1 at Sprucefield. Whilst these potential schemes are not currently on the agenda, they may become so in the near future if plans to redevelop the site of the former maze prizon accelerate. M1 can mean the following: M1 Garand, a US battle rifle circa WWII. M1 Carbine, a US carbine circa WWII. M1 Abrams, a US Main Battle Tank. ...
