The A1198 is a road in Cambridgeshire following the route of Ermine Street between the A505 at Royston, Hertfordshire and Godmanchester, near Huntingdon. The road was known as the A14 until the mid 90's when the number was changed upon completion of the current A14. There are three at-grade junctions along the road, with the B663 at Bythorn in Cambridgeshire (J15), at the Haughley Bends West of Stowmarket in Suffolk (J48) and at the Dockspur Roundabout at the edge of Felixstowe (J60).
The road known as the A14 until the mid-90's is now the A1198 between Royston, Hertfordshire and Godmanchester but, confusingly, retains its A14 designation north of Godmanchester until it meets the A1 road near Alconbury; thus forming a 'spur' off the main A14.
The gates guarding the end of the track from the A1198road were nice enough, but what really interested me were the carvings on top of the pillars, which seemed to me to be quite lifelike.
At the road turn left and walk eastwards past the church until a sharp right-hand bend is reached.
When the road ends at a T-junction beside the church turn right and start walking eastwards along the road; the car park where this walk started is situated along a track a couple of hundred yards away along this road.
