The A1231 begins with a single carriageway at the Esplanade roundabout on the southern edge of Mowbray Park - just to the south of the city centre. It shares the roundabout with the A1018 Ryhope Road, which is the main trunk road to the south of the city. As Stockton Road the A1231 heads north, past the Park Lane Interchange and toward the Durham Road Roundabout which is end-point of the A690 road - the main trunk road to the south-west of the city. As a dual carriageway, the north-bound A1231 becomes St. Michael's Way, part of which it shares with the the A183 road.
