A1 Grand Prix will feature identical single-seater cars which will not have the ultra-expensive and sophisticated driver aids which are part of today's F1 machines, meaning that the drivers have to rely on their ability rather than a superior car. As the championship is for countries, it will not have two championships each year like F1, one for drivers and the other for constructors of the cars.
Cars
All cars will use a Lola built chassis with 3.4 L capacity V8 engines built by Zytek. The chassis weighs approximately 600 kg (approx. 1300 lbs). The engine has a power output of 390 kW (520 bhp). Championship The first A1 Grand Prix Championship will be held over 12 rounds, with points being awarded to teams depending on their results in the two races in each round. The top ten-placed teams in each race will be awarded points, on a decreasing scale with the winner receiving 10 points, second place 9 points, and so on down to tenth place, who receives 1 point. This points system is used in both the sprint and feature race, and 1 extra point is awarded in each race for the team who sets the fastest lap. No points are awarded to the drivers in an effort to preserve the A1GP as being a contest between nations. The first round of A1GP -- the 2005-06 A1 Grand Prix of Nations, Great Britain -- is being held at Brands Hatch on 25 September 2005, with the first season ending at Shanghai, China on 2 April 2006. Race format Each A1 Grand Prix race meet will take place over a three-day period. Day one (Friday) will involve a practice session with each team familiarising themselves with the track. Day two (Saturday) will involve a second practice session and a qualifying session. Day three (Sunday) will consist of two races, with points awarded for both races. The qualifying session will be in a format completely unique to motor sport, designed both for entertainment, and to accomodate for television. Qualifying will take place from 14:00 to 16:00 local time, and consists of four 15 minute sessions. During each session, each team is allowed only three laps: one "out" lap, to get up to speed, one "hot" lap, run at full speed, and one "in" lap, to slow down and head back into the pits. Between each session will be ten minute breaks of inactivity, to allow for interviews, recaps, and commercial breaks. After the qualifying session, the team's two best times are aggregated, with that total time determining the starting grid for Sunday's first race. The race day format itself is again, completely unique to motor sport, with two races being run. The first race will a "sprint" race of 20 to 30 minutes in duration. This race will be started with a "rolling start", scheduled to start at 13:30 local time. Points will be awarded and the final grid positions will determined as a result of this first race. The second "main event" race will be held in the afternoon and last for 45 to 60 minutes. This race will start with a "standing start", and include a mandatory pit stop for tyres. Points will also be awarded for this race. For both races, the winner will be awarded ten points, second place nine points, and continuing down to tenth position with one point. One additional point will be awarded to the driver who sets the fastest lap time over both races.
