The road was part of the Highway "Brotherhood and Unity" in SFR Yugoslavia. The first section of the motorway was open in 1979, near Zagreb, and the last section between Županja and the Serbian border was open in 2006. The entire motorway, except the Zagreb bypass, is a toll road.
