The official A48(M) has the unusual feature that it has no junction options. At both ends it just leads into limited-access junctions with only one access option. It opened in 1977, originally as an ending for the M4 whose continuation westwards it was projected would be from St Mellons, as maps from the period show. Instead it was soon extended westwards by its more northerly route from junction 29 that left the A48(M) as a spur. This road also runs behind the large secondary school Brynteg.
