Jefferson moved to the Liberty without much difficulty, because the school was in the vincinity of most of the other member schools. Though Jefferson is in Alexandria, and closer to schools in the National District which is also made of Division 5 schools, the majority of the student body at Jefferson lives around McLean, Vienna, and Fairfax, where most of the Liberty District member schools are located. Jefferson is a magnet school which is science and technology oriented and also considered one of the top public high schools in the United States. Stone Bridge, which is located in Loudoun County petitioned to stay at the Dulles District because of transportation reasons (South Lakes is the closest being about 15 miles away to the east, and Jefferson the farthest being over 30 miles away). The Liberty District and the Dulles District supported Stone Bridge's petition to stay in AA, however it was unsuccessful because of two reasons. First, Stone Bridge at the time believed that the opening of Briar Woods High School would lower their enrollment under the AA/AAA cutoff, and later projections said that Stone Bridge would still be AAA size. Second, Region II, the AA region where the Dulles District is in did not support Stone Bridge's petition, because its larger enrollment may puts them at an unfair advantage over smaller schools that are determined to be AA in size. Interestingly enough, Stone Bridge won its first two state titles (both in AA) for cheerleading and girls soccer during the 2004-2005 school year, when the school was at 1,900 students, which is usually the size of a AAA Division 6 school. Virginia AA schools are typically between 700 to 1,500 students. Loudoun County, Virginia is part of the Washington-Baltimore Metropolitan Area. ...

Both Fairfax and Lee were perennial members of the Liberty District until 2005.
