Absa (JSE: ASA) is the largest consumer bank in South Africa. It is headquartered in Johannesburg. It was formed when four of the larger South African banks and building societies (Allied Bank, Trust Bank, United Building Society and Volkskas Bank) amalgamated to form a single bank, hence adopting the original name of ABSA: Amalgamated Banks of South Africa.
