The Australian Football League celebrates the best mark of the season through the annual Mark of the Year competition. After each round of the regular AFL season, the "mark of the week" is voted for by a panel of All-Australian selectors. For the first time in 2006, the general public are able to vote for nominated marks via the AFL's website. The results of the public voting are combined with the panel's votes. At the end of the home and away season, the "mark of the year" (along with the Goal of the Year) is voted for from the weekly winners list and announced. The winner of this competition is usually awarded to the most spectacular high mark. It is also rarely awarded to courageous, one handed or diving marks. The 2005 winner was Luke McPharlin of the Fremantle Football Club for a spectacular high-flying mark in the round-three derby against West Coast Eagles.
