The Rebel was available as a 4-door sedan, 4-door station wagon or 2-door hardtop sports coupe. A convertible and 2-door pillared coupe were available in 1967 and 1968. Engines included the 232 I6 (145/155 bhp), 290 (200/225 bhp), 343 (235/280 bhp) and 390 (315/325 bhp) V8s. The styling on the wagons and hardtops were similar to the senior Ambassador line. In 1970, the sedan and coupe recieved a rear-end facelift, along with a C-pillar restyle. The most recognizable version of this car was the Rebel Machine, which in its most garish form was colored white with bold red, white, and blue stripes. It had a 390 in³ V8 engine with 340 bhp (gross), the most powerful in any AMC vehicle. AMC's first answer to the epoch-changing Ford Mustang was the Marlin, an oddly attractive six-passenger sporty car that was much too big and lumbering to compete effectively in the pony car wars.
Additionally, AMC did beef up the suspension, which was utterly conventional circa 1970 -- control arms and coil springs up front assisted by an anti-sway bar, while at the rear was a live axle spring again with coils and another anti-sway bar.
Just 2,000 Rebel Machines rolled out of AM showrooms in the 1970 model year, but that's not surprising since, by the time it debuted, American Motors was already preparing the Matador that would take its place.

AMC was forced to constantly innovate for 33 years until it was absorbed by Chrysler in 1987.
