AMX International is a joint venture between Alenia (46.5%), EMBRAER (29.7%) and Aermacchi (23.6%) to build the AMX ground attack aircraft. The company is headquartered in Rome.


The partner companies produce different sections of the aircraft as follows:

  • Alenia: centre fuselage section and tail fin
  • EMBRAER: wings, elevators, air intakes, landing gear, fuel tanks
  • Aermacchi: front and rear fuselage sections

The AMX was originally conceived as a replacement for Italy's aging fleet of G91 and F-104 attack fighters.
The AMX then became a joint venture of three firms to develop a light attack fighter for both Italy and Brazil.
The AMX designers also put great emphasis on upgradability, and a fuselage bay can be easily fitted with several types of reconnaissance palets or other mission-specific avionics.

The AMX is a compact single-seat multi-role strike fighter aircraft, designed to fly low-altitude missions at high-subsonic speeds in day or night and in poor visibility.

Also the Brazilian AMX aircraft are equipped with two DEFA 544 30mm cannons, while the Italian variant is fitted with one M61A1 multi-barrel 20 mm canon.
