In 1993, AND1 initially began with a partnership with Seth Berger, Jay Coen Gilbert and Tom Austin as no more than a grad school project. Trash talk basketball slogans such as "Pass. In late 1998, a videotape containing streetball stunts was delivered to AND1 office by Ron Naclerio, coach of the Benjamin Cardozo High school team in Queens, New York. The tape contained low quality camera moves, poor resolution and nearly indecipherable audio featuring a streetballer by the name of Rafer Alston. At the time he was a student at Fresno State upon entering the 1998 NBA Draft. Alston would end up signing the first endorsement deal with the company. The highlight tape would soon be known as the "Skip tape" as it coincides with Rafer's streetball nickname "Skip to my Lou". At this time, the tape did not circulate outside the company. In 1999 AND1 marketing division shot their first series of commericals and print ads at Haverford College using NBA players Darrell Armstrong, Rex Chapman, Larry Hughes, Raef LaFrentz, Toby Bailey, Miles Simon in Philadelphia. While the traditional marketing campaign was unsuccessful, the young company would restrategize itself using the "Skip tape". Which was edited and reprinted into 50,000 copies in a limited run and distributed across basketball camps, clinics, record labels in the next 8 weeks. The tape would become the first "Mix Tape", and turned Alston into an overnight sensation[2].
