AP Biology is a course offered by the College Board to high school students in the United States to earn credit for a college-level biology course. This course is offered to highly motivated students who wish to pursue their interests in the biological sciences. AP Biology is usually taken by sophomores, juniors, or seniors, but enrollment depends on the policy of the individual high school offering the course. While some schools have selective acceptance into the course as determined by grades in prerequisite courses like biology and chemistry, other schools follow a more current trend of open enrollment, even encouraging students who may not have performed well in science courses, but who show potential to stretch and grow. As with all AP courses, this course prepares the student for the Advanced Placement exam in May (in the United States). The AP test consists of two sections. The first section, a 1 hour 20 minute section, is 100 multiple-choice questions (changed; previously 120). A 10 minute reading period is given to students prior to beginning the essays. During this time, a student may write notes on the exam sheet with questions, however, the answer booklet for writing actual responses must remain sealed. The second section, a 1 hour and 30 minute section, is 4 essays; students must answer all of the 4 essays. The grade is weighted 60% on section I and 40% on section II. However challenging it may seem, with hard work and preperation a student can achieve top marks (getting a 5). In fact, last year 18.2% of test takers received a score of a 5. Advanced Placement (AP) is the term used to describe high school classes that are taught at a college level. ...
